Sri Lanka is relatively unknown in the field of Golf, but surprisingly the country allows its visitors to have a golfing experience as it comprises three of the finest 18 holes courses in Asia. In fact, golfing in Sri Lanka is nothing new to country as its history runs back more than a century. Sri Lanka’s Amateur Golf Championship was instituted in the year 1891 follows the British Amateur as the oldest national championship in the world.

The four courses are situated in Colombo, Digana, Nuwara Eliya and Hambantota, Colombo at sea level, Digana at 600 m and Nuwara Eliya at an elevation of 2’070m and Hambantota in the beach resort have distinctly different terrain and climate conditions. Colombo – Royal Colombo Golf Club (1879)

The Royal Colombo Golf Course was first established in 1879 when the sport itself was introduced to Sri Lanka. It gained the ‘Royal’ status in 1928 and is the second oldest golf club to gain the ‘royal’ status outside of Britain. The panoramic landscape, the shimmering lake and a glimpse of rare wildlife on the course all contribute to this pastoral environment. Spreading across acres of greenery, the coveted club requires high discipline from the player. There are 18 holes, 6,560 Yards Black Tees, 6,303 Yards White Tees, 5,186 Yards Ladies’ Tee. There are separate practice sections as well. Green fees and caddie fees will be levied, but these are reduced if a visitor is a member of a golf club with which the Colombo club has an agreement with.

The club has a full functioning ladies’ division which has participated in and won many tournaments. The club’s notable features include gym and a relaxing lounge. Located in the core of Colombo, the Club welcomes temporary members to enjoy a round of golf in its serene setting. The Kelani Valley railway line runs through the course with the occasional train surging past. Kandy – Victoria International Golf and Country Resort

The Victoria International Golf and Country Resort is located in Kandy, the ancient capital of hill country which borders the Victoria Reservoir. It was recently constructed in a panoramic area surrounded by splendid views of neighboring Knuckles mountain range and following landscapes. The award winning course attracts visitors with its peaceful ambiance, as it meanders through beautifully trimmed lawns. Sweet fragrance of the flowering shrubs growing in small pockets throughout the course fills the air and uplifts golfers’ enthusiasm. Each hole offers a unique and demanding challenge, providing even experienced players with the opportunity to test their skills on a course which spreads across an astounding 517 acres.

This 18-hole golfing delight is one of the most popular golf courses in the world. Spanning across a spacious area of 517 acres, the Victoria Golf course offers a challenge to even veterans of the sport especially because of its topography. A nominal green fee is levied at different rates for locals and foreigners, with additional caddie and ball spotter fees. It is mandatory that all golfers get one caddie and ball spotter, in order to gain a better golfing experience. The academy wing organizes classes to enthusiastic beginners and hosts a range of tournaments for seasoned players. The resort allows the visitors to engage with various other recreational activities.

Nuwara Eliya – Nuwara Eliya Golf Club (1891)

The Nuwara Eliya Golf Club is situated among the tea plantations of the central highlands. Built in 1891 by a Scottish soldier for the British serviceman and officials, the beautiful course is just walking distance from the town center and since centuries it is still well kept and challenging. The course has been claimed as one of the most naturally scenic in the world, surrounded by forested hills and pleasant climate. Visitors would feel as if they were playing golf back in the British Isles! The course holds significant features such as the tropical fauna and flora which are unique to Sri Lanka adding splendor to the course.

The Nuwara Eliya Golf course set in one of the most scenic towns of the country is hugely popular with visitors due to its beauty as well as its demanding playing standards. Being at an altitude of 6,000 feet effects play as the ball travels faster and almost with an estimated six percent accuracy. This 18-hole golf course spans across almost 100 acres of land. Visitors are welcome as temporary members where if you are not a member, the club requires that visitors make a reservation prior to their arrival. There is a lively bar and restaurant where members can entertain guests. The club has a separate ladies’ section as well.

Hambantota – Sangri-La Golf & Country Resort

Shangri-La’s Hambantota Golf Resort and Spa is a 300-bedroom hotel plus an area spanned across 58.8 hectares with an 18-hole golf course. The hotel hails as Sri Lanka’s largest resort completed with a golf course deep in the south of the island. Sri Lanka’s first and only golf resort is set amongst a vast coconut palm plantation, offering spectacular views and unique challenges for both casual and seasoned players.
